CHAPTER 16

When Arthur got back to the suite, Dani, Anna, and Briana were sitting on the balcony, looking out at the ocean. It was dusk and the parking lot lights were on, reflecting off of the waves that gently broke on the shoreline. In the distance he could see several oil tankers, well lit up.

He opened the sliding glass door and said, “Who’s ready for dinner? I’m starving.”

Dani looked up at him and then said, “Briana, Anna, why don’t you go watch television for a little while? I’d like to talk to Arthur, and then we’ll go down to the restaurant. We met the head chef last night, and I made reservations there for tonight. We’ll leave in about an hour.”

Briana and Anna went inside where Arthur was pouring a glass of wine for Dani and one for himself. He walked out to the balcony and said, “Thanks. I need to talk to you.”

“Figured. That’s why I sent them away. I’ve been waiting on pins and needles to hear about your meeting. Shoot,” Dani said as she took a sip of her wine.

Arthur spent the next half hour telling her about it. When he was finished, he said, “Dani, I don’t really know what to do. On one hand I’d like to solve the murder. The fact that Mateo and Emilio want to hire me makes me think that even though they had a motive to murder Jackson, neither one of them was the killer.”

“And on the other hand?” Dani asked.

“On the other hand, I want to spend as much of our time that we have here with Anna. We had agreed that we’d go to the beach several times, surf, and visit Disneyland. I don’t want to disappoint her.”

Dani was quiet for several moments then she said, “Arthur, you have a very special relationship with Anna, and I don’t want anything to get in the way of that. The next few years with a budding teenager, from what I understand, aren’t always the easiest.

“As you’re well aware, I have absolutely no experience raising a child. I want her to continue to have a good relationship with you, because when she starts hating me, and from what I’ve heard, that’s almost a given no matter how loving she is at the moment, I’d like her to able to go to you if she needs some adult advice.

“Here’s my solution and advice for what it’s worth. Why don’t you take the case, but continue to take her surfing early in the mornings? I rather doubt that there will be something going on with the case at 6:00 in the morning. Briana and I can take her to the beach, and Disneyland isn’t scheduled for a few more days. You may be finished with the case by then. Is that a workable compromise?” Dani suggested.

“Yes, and I’m glad you think I’m good for Anna, because I just adore her. And I have a feeling you and Anna will get along great during her teenage years, and if not, I will be there to do whatever you want.
